The movie is good, but not quite as even as their regular material, IMO. I think the difference is that the Onion itself (and presumably ONN etc.) is written by a large staff of writers, and the movie was written by just a couple people. The movie, just by its format, doesn't capture the straight news feel that ONN does, and so doesn't have the same satirical bite. It feels less like parody, more like characters on the screen telling you jokes. Still really enjoyed the movie, though... don't get me wrong.

There's a great 14-minute segment in this episode of This American Life that covers how the Onion staff writes headlines.

As far as ONN goes, every video is funny. Some are more profound or genius than others (i.e. my top 20 list). There are different levels of funny within their sub-programs, though. So many of the greatest videos are in the Today Now format, which is an especially good platform for the shock material. (I did not include the cancer one, BTW, which probably not everyone should watch.) Most of the stuff in Sports Dome* goes over my head. The In The Know segments are usually over-acted (especially when physical comedy is involved), so I find them clever but not necessarily laugh-out-loud funny. I prefer the non-awareness of the actors in straight news, Today Now, Live From Congress, etc.

* I just found this:

This has given me a FANTASTIC idea for explaining irony to my ninth and tenth graders

Well, just show some of the clips and talk about dramatic irony. Possibly have them make their own clips.

I took the Christ-forsaken praxis II english pedagogy exam on Saturday, and wrote about dramatic irony in Romeo and Juliet. For the instructional strategy, I said I'd make some kids go in the hall and tell them that when they come back in they should open my cabinet because there's candy in it, then tell the kids in the classroom that there's a homicidal killer waiting in the cabinet for the first person to open it, thus exposing the "audience" to the suspense created by dramatic irony.

I expect to pass with flying colors.
